Nativelead leads investment in Renewable Energy start up Carbon Masters

Native Angel Network, the investment arm of Nativelead, the Tamil Nadu-based initiative for nurturing entrepreneurial ecosystems, has made a significant investment in Carbon Masters, the Bangalore-based renewable energy start-up. This top up investment was led by Nativelead with earlier investors in the company Indian Angel Network, clean-tech VC Sangam Ventures and other board members joining this round.

This investment reflects Nativelead’s commitment to support enterprises that focus on sustainability. With a mission to address the impacts of climate change, the Bangalore-based Carbon Masters, co-founded by Som Narayan and Kevin Houston has pioneered the development of India’s first bottled Bio-CNG brand Carbonlites.  Carbonlites is made by converting food and Agri wastes (otherwise destined for landfill) to clean renewable energy which can displace LPG for commercial cooking in restaurants and hotels. The “waste” by product of the process is converted to a nutrient rich organic manure which helps farmers reduce their use of Chemical fertilizers further reducing GHG missions.

An initiative to hasten innovation in clean energy, Mission Innovation’s 1.5°C Compatible Solutions Framework developed and led by Sweden has identified Carbonlites as one of the top 100 solutions in the world that can significantly reduce GHG emissions. 45 megatons of CO2e by 2030 when expanded globally.1

The investment of an undisclosed sum is led by Senthil Sankar of Nativelead Karur Chapter. He sees immense growth potential for the start-up that completed its second year since its seed round of investment with proven unit economics of Carbonlites and a scalable asset lite business model with corporate partners and municipal bodies across India according to Senthil Sankar.

The major revenue streams for Carbon Masters are from the sale of Carbonlites Bio-CNG cooking Gas, Carbonlites Bio-Enriched Organic Manure, Plant operations fees and the sale of ancillary products required to set up the infrastructure.

Native Angels Network leads investment in renewable energy firm Carbon Masters

Native Angels Network, launched by Tamil Nadu-based Nativelead, has led an investment in Carbon Masters, a Bengaluru-based renewable energy startup.

The network was joined by earlier investors Indian Angel Network, clean-tech venture fund Sangam Ventures and other board members.

Nativelead invests in enterprises that focus on sustainability, said co-founder and chairman Nagaraja Prakasam, who is also a partner with social venture capital investor Acumen.

“Our typical investments are in the range of Rs 10 lakh to Rs 1 crore. In this Rs 3 crore round, we have invested Rs 1.70 crore, which is our highest investment,” Prakasam told VCCircle.

The investment was led by Senthil Sankar of Nativelead Karur Chapter, Karur being a city in Tamil Nadu.

Carbon Masters, co-founded in 2009 by Som Narayan and Kevin Houston, has developed bottled bio-CNG brand Carbonlites.

Carbonlites is made by converting food and agri wastes (otherwise destined for landfill) to renewable energy which can displace LPG for commercial cooking in restaurants and hotels.

Complete end-to-end waste management solutions provider Carbon Masters has started making waves by changing the way we look at waste and driving the ‘Clean India, Clean Energy’ movement.

This Bengaluru-based renewable energy start-up, which has pioneered the development of India’s first bottled bio-CNG (compressed natural gas) under the brand ‘Carbonlites’ has received a top-up investment of ₹3 crore.

Carbon Masters is the brain-child of Som Narayan and Kevin Houston.

This investment was led by Native Angel Network, the investment arm of Nativelead, with earlier investors Indian Angel Network, clean-tech VC Sangam Ventures and other board members joining the round.

Nagaraja Prakasam, founder-Chairman, Nativelead, who is a lead investor and board member of Carbon Masters, told BusinessLine that the investment reflected Nativelead’s commitment to support ventures that focus on sustainability.

“Dumping of waste is a huge menace, be it at street corners or dump yards. If only this could be segregated, treated and converted into renewable energy, it would help tide over several problems. This is exactly what Carbon Masters is focussed on, in their quest for a ‘Clean India’”, said Prakasam adding that “the daily generation of wet waste is estimated at over 1.60 lakh-tonnes.”

The company has developed a bottled bio CNG (compressed natural gas) brand ‘Carbonlites’. “It is made by converting food and agri wastes into clean renewable energy that can displace LPG for commercial cooking in restaurants and hotels,” said a release.
